An Unforgettable Day in Amish Country: Finding Family Far From Home

Certain days in life stay in our hearts forever. For my husband and me, one of those unforgettable days was our trip to Amish Country in Shipshewana, Indiana.

Living in the United States without any close family nearby can sometimes be difficult. There are moments when we miss family gatherings, celebrations, and even simple conversations around the dinner table. Like many immigrants, we have experienced loneliness from time to time. Yet, through God's grace, He has blessed us with wonderful friends and caring neighbors who have become like family.

One Saturday, our neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Leinbach, invited us to join them on a day trip to one of their favorite places — Shipshewana, Indiana. We were excited because it would be our first visit to Amish Country.

An Early Start

We left home at 6:00 a.m., hoping to avoid Chicago's morning traffic. Unfortunately, despite our early start, we still got caught in heavy traffic and arrived nearly two hours later than planned. Although the drive took longer than expected, our excitement never faded. We enjoyed talking, laughing, and admiring the countryside along the way.

A Delicious Amish Breakfast

Our first stop was an Amish buffet restaurant. It was unlike any breakfast I had experienced before. The aroma of freshly baked bread, homemade pastries, and hot country-style dishes filled the restaurant.

Everything was prepared fresh that morning. There were countless choices, including homemade breads, eggs, pancakes, meats, fruits, and traditional Amish specialties. What impressed me most was not only the quality of the food but also how affordable everything was. It truly felt like eating a homemade meal prepared with love.

Exploring the Famous Shipshewana Flea Market

After breakfast, we visited the famous Shipshewana Flea Market. We spent several hours walking through the market, browsing hundreds of vendor booths filled with handmade crafts, home décor, fresh produce, clothing, tools, antiques, and gardening supplies.

We purchased fresh vegetables and several beautiful flower plants at prices much lower than what we usually pay near Chicago. It was exciting to discover so many unique items while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the market.

Shopping for Amish Specialties

Next, we visited several Amish specialty stores. We found shelves filled with homemade jams, pickles, baked goods, candies, and handcrafted products. We couldn't leave without buying a few jars of fresh homemade jam.

Later, we stopped at a local cheese and meat market. The selection was amazing. The cheese was fresh, the meat looked excellent, and the prices were surprisingly affordable. Compared to stores in our area, everything was much less expensive while maintaining outstanding quality.

My First Live Musical Drama

One of the highlights of the day was attending a live musical drama.

This was the very first live stage performance I had ever seen. Before attending, I honestly believed that the actors simply lip-synced to pre-recorded music. To my surprise, every song, every instrument, and every performance was completely live.

The musicians were incredibly talented, and the actors performed with so much passion and energy. The story was entertaining, emotional, and filled with meaningful life lessons about faith, family, love, forgiveness, and hope. It was an experience I will never forget.

Ending the Day with Another Wonderful Meal

Before heading home, we enjoyed another delicious Amish meal. Once again, everything was freshly prepared. We especially loved the homemade desserts and traditional Amish sweets. Every bite reminded us of the care and dedication that goes into preparing homemade food.

More Than a Vacation

As we drove home that evening, I realized that this trip was about much more than shopping, sightseeing, or eating delicious food.

It reminded us that family is not always defined by blood. Sometimes, God places people in our lives who love us, care for us, and walk beside us when our own families are far away.

Mr. and Mrs. Leinbach didn't simply take us on a vacation — they gave us a day filled with kindness, laughter, fellowship, and unforgettable memories.

Living far from our relatives isn't always easy. There are days when we miss home deeply. But experiences like this remind us that God faithfully provides the people we need at the right time.

Final Thoughts

This day will always hold a special place in my heart. We discovered beautiful Amish traditions, enjoyed delicious homemade food, watched an inspiring live musical, found wonderful bargains, and most importantly, experienced genuine friendship.

To Mr. and Mrs. Leinbach, thank you for your generosity, your friendship, and your kindness. You made us feel loved and welcomed.

Sometimes, the greatest blessing isn't the destination — it's the people who share the journey with you.

“A friend loves at all times.”

— Proverbs 17:17
